News - Buku Kakuro on sale for $2.99 today only!

At the beginning of August, Big Fish Games had said they would run the Daily Deals event through the end of August. At the beginning of September, they announced that they would continue the Daily Deals until the end of September. As you know, September is coming to a close this week. Will Big Fish keep the Daily Deals going? I sure hope so. Not only do we like deals, but I think the event is surfacing a batch of lesser-known or forgotten games we may never have tried.

Want to know what I'd like to see in the Daily Deal lineup? I'd really like to see Farm Frenzy. It's a game that I love and have in the queue, but have not yet purchased. It's the first of a 4-game series, which seems to fit the model for Daily Deal games. What are the chances that Big Fish will offer it as a Daily Deal? My guess is that it's still popular enough that they won't do it. But who knows? Maybe they'll surprise us.

Now, onto today's Daily Deal!

News - Stoneloops! of Jurassica on sale for $2.99 today only!

First, a little bit of personal gaming news.

I hope you grabbed Ancient Quest of Saqqarah the other day when it was on sale for $2.99. This game is really good. I have finished the first two temples (Isis, Thot) and I am now playing the third temple (Anubis, I believe). So far, each temple has had a different style of gameplay. The first temple was a Match-3 variant, but the other temples have been other types of puzzles using the same mechanic of stones on threads which you place in groups to fill in the spaces between them. There's a lot of bang for the buck here, and I'm still consistently pleased with the production values. The voice work is among the best I've heard, the music is good (although a larger soundtrack would be nice), and the puzzling remains fun. And, if you need more Saqqarah goodness, you can go over to the developer's website and purchase SaqPacks, which are expansions for the game with new levels, features, music, etc.

If you didn't get a copy of this game while it was on sale, you should still try it. It's worth it, I think. Now, onto the Daily Deal. Coincidentally, it's another game from Codeminion (the developer of Ancient Quest of Saqqarah, who until a few days ago, I hadn't even heard of):

While Codeminion had what I think is the best Match-3 variant I've tried (Ancient Quest of Saqqarah), their version of marble popping is lacking. In this version, you have to suction a ball out of the string first, then you shoot it back to create groups of 3 or more. I prefer the traditional style, which eliminates the suction step. I've raved about Luxor 3 before, and I still haven't found anything that comes close to the sweetness that game provides. If you're a marble poppin' freak, then you should try Stoneloops! of Jurassica. Just don't expect another Luxor game.

News - Ancient Quest of Saqqarah on sale for $2.99 today only!

Today's $2.99 Daily Deal (from the Big Fish toolbar) :

Category: Match 3
This is one of the rare occasions when I am impressed by, and recommend, a Match-3 game. This is not your ordinary square-grid Match-3 game.

The first thing that stands out about this game is that everything was done well. The production here has great draw. The music is good, the graphics and animations are excellent, the voice-over work is great, the gameplay is fun, and the mechanics are original. All of this is flavored with an ancient Egypt theme. And the magical blue talking humanoid monkey is pretty cool too.

In this game, you're lining up groups of things, but they are all interconnected by threads. As you make matches, these threads light up. Once all of the threads around a cell are lit up, the cell is filled in with color. Once all cells are filled in, the level is complete. The gameplay is quick too. You can make swaps as quickly as your mouse finger can click. Making lots of matches in quick succession creates combos and earns you bonuses.

There are upgrades available to purchase as you go, and you'll also have to deal with bad blocks which show up now and then to hinder you. Additionally, game appears to be loaded with levels.

Games with this kind of production quality are hard for me to turn down. Why not give this one a try? You might find that you agree with me!

Oh yeah, and today is the day to buy it while it's $2.99.

News: Empire Builder - Ancient Egypt and Pantheon!

Today you get another strategic building game!

Overview

  • Camera: angled top-down view
  • Timed?: choose between timed and relaxed modes
  • Graphics: great
  • Music: melodic Egyptian
  • Theme: Ancient Egypt

Why must these game companies do this to suckers like me? You may remember that I had a lot of fun with Hotel Mogul and Build-a-Lot 4: Power Source. Well, Empire Builder - Ancient Egypt is the same kind of game, but with an Ancient Egyptian theme. I really get into Ancient Egyptian stuff (it was the only part of history class that I liked). And to top it off, they throw in good Egyptian music and cool looking people and camels walking along the streets as you work. The camera angle is good, the controls are easy, the character art is excellent. What's not to like? If you like this type of economic building game, I recommend trying this one.

Here's mud on your face! - a review of Nancy Drew Dossier: Resorting to Danger

Before Nancy Drew Dossier: Resorting to Danger, my favorite casual game was Nancy Drew Dossier: Lights, Camera, Curses. Well, this new sequel is now my other favorite casual game. Read on to find out why!

What I liked

  • Top-notch music
  • Fun and original mechanics
  • Great story
  • Multiple endings
  • Mini games / puzzles
  • Excellent voice acting (for the most part)

What I didn't like

  • A few of the voices
  • The reward for achieving Master Detective rank
  • Short allotted time for bomb puzzles
  • Too short of game length! Give me more!

Genre

Adventure / Mystery / Object-combining

Quick Plot

Someone at the luxurious Redondo Resort and Spa is planting bombs. Your job as the illustrious girl detective is to track down the perpetrator. Which of the six mysterious suspects is responsible?

Highlights

Mechanics

I love the original object-matching mechanic used in the Nancy Drew Dossier games. Most of the game puts you in one of many rooms where there are various objects to locate with your magnifying glass (mouse cursor). You hover the mouse around the room until it sparkles on some object or area, at which point you can click to reveal a usable feature of the room. You are told how many of these objects exist in each scene.

As you find these objects, you can match them by clicking two of them in a row. If the match is successful, you earn points. If not, you get nothing and your points counter resets. With each successive correct match, the number of points you earn increases. For this reason, I always make sure to find every object in a room before attempting matches. It is too easy to make a mistake if you don't know what all of your options are.

Once you've found all of the matches in a room, the game progresses.

Puzzles and mini games

Throughout the game you'll face various puzzles and mini games including (but not limited to):
  • Bomb-diffusing (connect one end to the other end, like the pipe game)
  • Mud masking spa clients (logical sequence puzzle)
  • Getting correct answers in conversations (requires you to be observant as you go)
  • Animal-catching
  • Riddle-solving
  • Unlocking various objects
Music

You know I'm picky about music in games. Fortunately, Her Interactive has hired Matt Sayre to compose the music for the Dossier series. I respect Mr. Sayre. He's one of the few good composers out there working on casual games. The music is fitting and fun in both Dossier games. This helps push the game to the "great" category.

Production

The best thing about the Dossier games is the attention to quality. So many casual games feel as if they were thrown together, with a terrible lack of quality writing, editing, and English in general. In this game, the music, graphics, writing, voice work (except for maybe 2 exceptions) are all as good as it gets. It's so fun to play a game with a well-written story! Her Interactive has my confidence that they will always deliver the goods, whether it be with their adventure game series or their Dossier series.

Suitable for the family?

Yes. The kids really enjoy this game. The geniuses at Her Interactive put a recurring dog character in the game, which is perfect for drawing the attention of the little ones. Additionally, the game is always moving and changing, which keeps the halflings from growing bored.

The family man's final ruling

It doesn't get better than this, friends.
Go download Lights, Camera, Curses first, and then play Resorting to Danger.

My main gripe is that, knowing how tricky it was to achieve Master Detective rank in the first Dossier game, I was very careful to avoid mistakes this time around so I could earn enough points to unlock whatever tasty morsels they had for me at the end. I was very disappointed. All that work turned out to be for nothing, really. Grrrrrrr. In my mind, Master Detective rank should unlock some great 10-minute movie to wrap-up the plot or show you what happened afterward or something. As it is, it was a huge letdown. The payoff for Master Detective rank was much better in the first Dossier game. In my mind, the reward should be spectacular. Couldn't Her Interactive have polished this element of the game just a bit more?

On the other hand, they offered multiple endings this time around, which provides replay value. You may find yourself wanting to go back and play it again immediately, just to find out what happens in the other endings.

So, this is as much fun and quality as you'll find on the casual game market.

You'll like the game if...

  • You like Nancy Drew games
  • You like solving mysteries
  • You like a variety of puzzles and mini games
  • You like a good story

You won't like the game if...

  • You don't like matching or combining things
  • You don't like Nancy Drew mysteries

My rating:
