News - Buku Dominoes for $2.99 today only!

According to Big Fish's original offer, this would be the last day of their Daily Deals. Looking around their site now, I don't see any indicator that they are shutting down the Daily Deals at the end of August, as they had originally indicated. If that's the case, you know I'll keep posting the deals here for you. If they stop the Daily Deals, you can keep checking back here for any other deals that come up.

Before I tell you about today's Daily Deal, let me tell you, I've been really enjoying the new Nancy Drew Dossier: Resorting to Danger.
Casual games don't get any better than this, friends. Do yourself a favor and play this game. But first, I recommend you play the first game in the series, Lights, Camera, Curses.

Now onto the Daily Deal!

News - Sprill and Ritchie and Jewel Match 2!

A popular game has finally made it's appearance on Big Fish Games today!

Overview

  • Style: High-quality 3D objects
  • Timed?: no
  • Hint system: unlimited, slow refill
  • Music: weak synth music
  • Theme: time travel; science stuff
  • Objects per scene: varies
  • Penalty for wrong clicks: yes, after too many wrong clicks the screen freaks out for a short time

Recently, Big Fish has been showing us that high-quality hidden objects games are still being produced. Oh, but Sprill and Ritchie: Adventures in Time is more than just finding hidden items. You will also combine some items and play various mini-games/puzzles, like building things or piecing items back together. The only weak element was the music. But the character animations are really cool. Sprill and Ritchie are fuzzy little creatures. I imagine kids will like this one too.

I really liked this one. I recommend you give it a try.

Today, Big Fish finally released the game I've been looking forward to for months!

Overview

  • Timed?: some scenes and mini games are timed
  • Gameplay: Hidden objects; combining objects; conversations; mini games and puzzles

  • Graphics: excellent drawn scenes; great 3D animated characters
  • Theme: mystery adventure; danger
  • Voice acting: excellent
  • Objects per scene: varies
Nancy Drew Dossier: Resorting to Danger does everything right, just as the first Nancy Drew Dossier did. There is always something fun to do. The variety keeps the game interesting as you move from scene to scene, carefully locating and combining objects in the correct order to maximize your points. You'll talk with various suspects and play several mini games and puzzles.

This time around, you're working at an exclusive spa where millionaires expect the best service. Your job is to figure out what's going on with the recent bombings at the spa.

Nancy Drew Dossier: Resorting to Danger available for download!

I've downloaded my copy and I'm looking forward to starting it. I'll write more about it later. Look here tomorrow for a download link.

News - Fill Up and Letter Lab!

Today we get a new economic time management game!

Overview

  • Your role: gas station manager
  • Theme: building a successful gas station
  • Music: poor
  • Graphics: very good
  • Interface: angled overhead view
Lately, I've been glad anytime a new game comes out that isn't Match 3 or hidden objects. Those genres seem to be losing steam as more and more mediocre variations are released on the market. This state of affairs makes games like Fill Up! very welcome.

Get ready for lots of drag and drop, because that is the primary mouse function in this game. You'll be constantly dragging vehicles to various gas pumps to fill up. You'll have to earn money to build additional structures and upgrades, and you'll need to keep your pumps filled up.

Overall, the game gets the job done, but it lacks the polish of some other similar games. The English is somewhat weak (I don't know why these foreign developers don't hire English writers and editors) and the interface could use some tweaks. Still, if you don't mind lots of drag-and-drop, this game should be fun for the time management crowd.

Nertz was the card game we played as a family when I was a kid. This game actually does a good job of computerizing it. My two minor complaints are that I wish the cards were presented in the standard suits instead of generic red, blue, green, and yellow. Additionally, I wish I could arrange my play area as I would in real life. Still, you should try this if you're a nertz fan. Today only, you can get it for $2.99!

News - Time Machine: Evolution and Magic Farm: Ultimate Flower!

It's a day for games with interesting names - and the new release for the day is Time Machine: Evolution!

Overview

  • Graphics: good
  • Music: nothing special
  • Theme: I think it's supposed to be time travel?
  • Story and Writing: Nothing significant
This new Match-3 game actually brings something new to the table. Instead of swapping pieces, you use a futuristic-looking cannon to shoot blasts of color onto a square of your choice, changing that square into the color you shot. In this way, you make your matches. Right-clicking rotates your cannon's color wheel, allowing you to choose your color.

Personally, I find this more enjoyable than swap-style Match 3. It's quicker and simplifies some of the decision-making.

As you complete matches, you are trying to gain the gems which show up on some of the squares. Once you have collected enough gems, the level ends. You can then spend money you've earned in an upgrades shop. This includes power-ups like dynamite and fire which can help you to break large groups of squares when used during a level.

The weirdest thing to me, and the reason I wouldn't want to play this with my kids, is the random woman they have standing on the start screen and in between levels, scantily clad in animal fur wrappings. I don't think this gratuitous feature serves any purpose other than the amusement of male developers and gamers. There is no real story holding the game together. As you play levels, you see this woman's head and bare shoulders in a little window. She smiles at you as you collect gems. Is this what it takes to sell casual games now?

News - Relic Hunt and Concentration!

Today, you get a new hidden objects game!

Overview

  • Timed?: no
  • Hint system: limited number; earn more by finding certain objects
  • Music: weak
  • Graphics: fair
  • Theme: family mystery (this is the third recent HOG with this theme)
  • Penalty for wrong clicks: yes, after several incorrect clicks, the screen darkens and your cursor spins around for a while

Relic Hunt. Cool name, isn't it? Does the game live up to the coolness of its title? Not really.

The English in this game is fairly poor, and most of the production is generally mediocre considering the standard set by a number of other developers. The thing that interested me most was the story - a grandson and grandfather relationship, and some treasure.

I would only recommend this to hidden objects junkies who have already played all the really good hidden objects games out there. (My top recommendations are listed in the sidebar on the right.)

News - Eden and Jewel Match!

A new Match-3 game is on the menu today!

Overview

  • Graphics: well-done; nothing amazing
  • Music: mediocre synth music
  • Theme: gardening
  • Story and Writing: fair English usage; the story is a stretch, but it's educational regarding flowers and gardening

News - Princess Isabella: A Witch's Curse and Blood Ties!

Friends, I am glad to write today because after a long, long spell of fair and merely good games, today we get a truly great game. I hope you can enjoy this one as much as I have!

Overview

  • Style: Mysterious / magical
  • Timed?: no
  • Hint system: unlimited, slow refill
  • Music: great orchestral music
  • Theme: mystery; family history
  • Objects per scene: varies; about 10
  • Penalty for wrong clicks: yes, after about 7 incorrect clicks the mouse stops functioning temporarily

I thought I would never see a game to match the quality and style of Return to Ravenhearst. I was delighted to play Princess Isabella: A Witch's Curse and have my confidence restored - some developers are still working on games with very high production standards.

This game is not just a hidden objects game. You'll be solving puzzles, picking up inventory items and using them in various places, and interacting with the environment with the aid of your fairy friend. The game always has something interesting to do, so you won't find yourself stuck or bored. The scenery, the in-game text, the voice-overs, the interface - everything is done well. The graphics are shiny, and the music is surprisingly good. They got a good composer for this game.

Princess Isabella: A Witch's Curse feels to me like an adventure game with hidden objects scenes included. I recommend getting this game.

News - The Village Mage: Spellbinder and Professor Fizzwizzle!

Time for more Match 3, if you can believe it...

With all of the high-quality casual games being developed, I'm always surprised when something this mediocre is released on the market. My only guess is that there must be Match 3 addicts out there who download every Match-3 game they can get their mouse hand on.

Everything about this game seems mediocre to me. It bears an attractive title, but the gameplay offers nothing new, nothing shiny, nothing innovative, and nothing to create draw for the player.

And yet, you Match 3 addicts know you've at least got to give it a trial run!

So if you're determined to prove me wrong, click the image below to try it. Honestly, I'm not a Match 3 fan, so I may be missing something. If so, please comment on this post and let me know why this game is a worthy competitor in the Match 3 market. I would be pleased to receive some education from the Match 3 crowd!

News - The Mystery of the Mary Celeste and Abra Academy!

Today, you get a new hidden objects game!

The Mystery of the Mary Celeste puts you on a boat called the Mary Celeste. And your name is, um, Mary.

Overview

  • Hidden objects scene graphics: 3D rendered
  • Timed: no
  • Hint system: unlimited; slow refill
  • Music: nothing special; mysterious
  • Theme: mystery; paranormal
  • Objects per scene: varies

This game has a gorgeous look to it. The environments are nicely rendered and the interface is easy to understand. This game has one of my favorite hidden objects features: it shows you pictures of the things you need to find instead of word descriptions. You also use some of the objects for required tasks in the story. Sometimes a little circular pane will show up when you can place usable items, as in Treasure Seekers.

The Mystery of the Mary Celeste makes itself immediately appealing, so I recommend you go solve this maritime mystery!
